AFGHANISTAN

Country Snapshot

Afghanistan is recognized as the most heavily mined country in the world.  The impact of decades of war and conflict, combined with the rule of the oppressive Taliban regime beginning in 1996 has devastated all aspects of society.  Lack of access to housing, electricity, clean water, medical care, and employment places Afghanistan as one of the poorest countries in the world.  Additionally, Afghanistan has the world’s lowest literacy rate, with 87.4% of women and 56.9 % of men over 15 not able to read.

Further exacerbating the struggles, especially for Afghan women, is the extremely high birth rate and corresponding infant mortality rate; the lack of security and sense of safety to go about daily activities; and the widespread presence of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW).

Planned Activities

The World Rehabilitation Fund is committed to providing appropriate and innovative limb technology to 2,000 amputees, paired with targeted vocational training opportunities, to address the challenges of rehabilitation and social integration for amputees in Afghanistan.

This program will aim to overcome typical issues associated with rehabilitation efforts, such as:

  • Limited access to services
  • Lengthy training of technician
  • Post-fitting rehabilitation
  • Imperfect fits
  • Frequent adjustments and maintenance

Goals

The program will ensure that newly-fitted amputees are trained in viable skills and have access to income-generating opportunities.  This will be accomplished through its collaboration with and linking to local vocational training programs and enterprise development initiatives.

The ultimate goal will be to strengthen the program beneficiaries’ participation in their families and communities.
