On December 19th, 2006, the World Rehabilitation Fund was awarded a new grant for Lebanon. The grant is being funded by United States Agency for International Development/Office of Foreign Disaster. The project "Preventing Injuries from Cluster Bombs, Unexploded Ordinance, and Landmines; and Alleviating the Burden of Disability in South Lebanon" is an aftermath of the recent war of July and August 2006. The Lebanese are trying to rebuild their lives - particularly in South Lebanon where children, youth, farmers, residents and visitors face the danger of more than a million unexploded munitions, cluster bombs, and landmines.
The number of disabled has increased; the families face hardships due to destruction of households and livelihoods. Programs addressing the burden of disability and the needs of the disabled are very few and inadequately structured and financed. Many institutions serving the disabled have been destroyed by the war. This program is aimed at allowing individuals, families and communities to move forward the process of recovery and reconstruction.
