Founded in 1955, the World Rehabilitation Fund is the pioneer organization devoted to the development and implementation of rehabilitation programs for people with disabilities throughout the world.

The Mission of the World Rehabilitation Fund, Inc. (WRF)

To improve the quality of life for people with disabilities throughout the world, especially in war torn and developing countries. We develop programs which empower people with disabilities to improve their skills and knowledge of rehabilitation utilizing practitioners in the area of medical, psychosocial, and economic reintegration. The World Rehabilitation Fund aims to give help and hope to people around the world who have disabilities or are working to improve the lives of those who do.

Lebanon Emergency project:

On December 19th, 2006, the World Rehabilitation Fund was awarded a new grant for Lebanon.  The grant is being funded by United States Agency for International Development/Office of Foreign Disaster.  The project "Preventing Injuries from Cluster Bombs, Unexploded Ordinance, and Landmines; and Alleviating the Burden of Disability in South Lebanon" is an aftermath of the recent war of July and August 2006.  The Lebanese are trying to rebuild their lives - particularly in South Lebanon where children, youth, farmers, residents and visitors face the danger of more than a million unexploded munitions, cluster bombs, and landmines.

The number of disabled has increased; the families face hardships due to destruction of households and livelihoods.  Programs addressing the burden of disability and the needs of the disabled are very few and inadequately structured and financed.  Many institutions serving the disabled have been destroyed by the war.  This program is aimed at allowing individuals, families and communities to move forward the process of recovery and reconstruction.

Lebanon:

WRF continues its involvement in Lebanon primarily within the framework of its Humanitarian Mine Action Program that was launched in 1998. The Program is supported by the Leahy War Victims Fund and the United States Agency For International Development.

Afghanistan:

WRF has just completed (June 2005) a fact finding mission into Afghanistan. The mission was carried by Deputy Executive Director Miriam Gettinger. The findings are used to develop a program that contributes to addressing overwhelming needs in Afghanistan.

NOTE: The World Rehabilitation Fund is not a funding agency, and unfortunately we do not have the resources or programs to assist people on an individual basis. To learn more about WRF programs and the groups we are working with, click here.
